Why Did My Soap Rice or Separate?

Short answer: ricing is small lumps in your batter that look like rice or cottage cheese. It usually happens when something in the fragrance reacts with the hard oils and butters in your recipe. You can often stick blend the lumps smooth, then pour quickly. Next time, add the fragrance to your liquid oils before the lye, or at emulsion.

What ricing looks like

  • Small, firm lumps appear soon after the fragrance goes in.
  • The batter around them may look thin or oily.
  • In the finished bar, ricing can leave small hard spots or a speckled cut.

What causes it

  • The fragrance. Some fragrance ingredients bind with the harder oils and butters, which form the lumps. Florals and spicy fragrances do it more often.
  • When it went in. Adding fragrance at a thicker trace gives it less chance to mix in evenly.
  • Your recipe. Recipes rich in hard oils and butters (palm, cocoa butter, shea, lard, tallow) rice more easily.

If it's ricing right now

  1. Stick blend through it. Blend until the lumps smooth out. The batter will thicken as you go.
  2. Pour quickly. Skip the swirl and get it into the mold while you can.
  3. Texture the top if it's too thick to smooth.

Oil or fragrance pooling

Sometimes the fragrance keeps the batter from coming together, and oil pools on top. Try stick blending again to bring it back together. Oil that pools in the mold afterward usually means the fragrance wasn't fully mixed in, or there was more fragrance than the batter could hold.

What to change next batch

  • Stir the fragrance into your room-temperature liquid oils before the lye goes in, or add it at emulsion.
  • Mix it in well before the batter starts to thicken.
  • Stay at or under 6% of your oil weight. See How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Soap?
  • Make a small test batch with any fragrance known to rice.
