Why Did My Soap Lose Its Scent?
Short answer: fragrance doesn't turn into soap. As water leaves your bars during cure, it can carry some of the scent with it. Light top notes like citrus fade fastest. To keep scent strong, use enough fragrance, choose fragrances that hold up in soap, build on deeper notes, and cure and store your bars well.
Why soap loses its scent
- Cure. Fragrance sits in the soap as free oil. As water evaporates over the weeks of cure, it takes some fragrance along.
- Top notes. Bright, light notes (lemon, lime, grapefruit, some florals) are the first to go. Deep base notes (patchouli, cedarwood, amber, vanilla) last longest.
- Too little fragrance. A light rate smells nice in the pot and faint after cure.
- Citrus essential oils. Lemon and lime essential oils fade quickly in cold process. See Using Essential Oils in Soap.
- Where you cure and store it. Warm rooms and direct sun speed up fading.
How to keep your scent
- Use enough. Cold process: around 5% of your oil weight (up to 6% for a strong scent), within the fragrance's IFRA limit. See How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Soap?
- Choose fragrances that hold up. Read the maker's soap testing notes and reviews. If a fragrance fades even at a strong rate, try a different one.
- Pair light notes with deep ones. Blend a citrus with patchouli, cedarwood or an amber so the scent has something to hold on to.
- Cure cool and dry, out of direct sun, then store finished bars wrapped.
- Lather before you judge. The outside of a bar can smell faint while the inside is still strong.

Melt and pour
Melt and pour holds scent well, because there's no cure. If it fades, the fragrance may have gone in when the base was too hot, or the bars were left unwrapped. Add the fragrance once the base has cooled a little, and wrap bars when they're set.
