Single-Note Botanicals

Single-source essential oils, distilled or pressed from one botanical rather than blended. They smell exactly like the plant, which is the appeal, and they fade faster in soap and wax than a fragrance oil, which is the trade-off. Citrus oils oxidize quickest, and cold-pressed citrus oils can be phototoxic in leave-on products, so check each page for the IFRA usage rate before you formulate.
