About this color

If your soap recipes could use some drama, meet Activated Charcoal. Sustainably sourced and startlingly effective, it's our go-to for getting an honest, true black rather than the muddy gray some colorants settle for, all without turning your lather the same shade.

Mixing it in couldn't be simpler: blend it straight into your batter or whisk it into your oils first, either way you'll land on a deep, convincing black. One tip from our team: if you gel your soap, the black gets even richer, so don't skip that step if jet black is the goal.

Use Rate

CP Soap: Use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal per pound of oils.
MP Soap: Use 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of activated charcoal per pound of soap base.

More or less can be added to achieve your desired color.

A note on natural colorants and the FDA

Natural colorants like this one are widely used in soap and personal care, but they aren't an FDA-approved color additive. Because of that, FDA rules require us to list them as not approved for each use above. That doesn't mean they're unsafe. It only means the FDA hasn't approved them as a colorant. See the FDA's list of approved color additives
